Doctor Marcus Setchell has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen's New Year's Honours list after a year which saw him deliver Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge's son Prince George.

Queen Elizabeth II's longtime gynaecologist delayed his retirement in order to be Kate's personal physician during her pregnancy, which saw her suffer with acute morning sickess, before overseeing the delivery of George with Dr Alan Farthing in July.

The 70-year-old specialist is now a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order after the Queen named the doctor as one of her honourees in the New Year's list.

Sir Marcus spoke movingly of Prince George's birth in the hours after the delivery, telling reporters: "It was a precious, unforgettable moment when I held the future king of England."

Setchell also cared for Sophie, Countess of Wessex during her ectopic pregnancy in 2001 and her premature labour with daughter Louise in 2003.

Caroline Cassells, longtime matron at King Edward VII's Hospital, where Kate was treated, also made the queen's list of honorees: She was named a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, or LVO.
