As well as giving a nod to Australia's national colour with the bright hue and one of their one leading fashion designers, the outfit meant the Duchess stood out against the crowd of suits when later the Royal couple received an official welcome at the Sydney Opera House at a reception of around 400 people.

The Duchess usually sticks to the rather dreary creams, blues and greens for her wardrobe but really hit it out the park when it came to a statement colour with the flattering cut. A much more youthful look for the at times dated Kate, we think it could be her best look of the whole trip.

Prince William, who has reportedly been offering his satirical choices during the tour so far, wasn't so much a fan though. Kate told a well-wisher who complimented her dress: "William said I look like a banana."

It comes after Kate's hubby reportedly told the Duchess another outfit was "too bright" while they were in New Zealand.

After arriving the couple met well-wishers at the Opera House before retiring to Admiralty House across Sydney bay which will be their base for the visit.

Making a speech on arrival, William admitted he had been keen to bring his family along following his first official visit four years ago: "This visit to Australia has been one that Catherine and I have been looking forward to for a long time.

"On my first visit here as an adult in 2010, I remember just how bowled over I was by Sydney: seeing the energy and diversity of this beautiful city, and understanding just how much Australia is the home of innovation, opportunity and possibility."

He added: "I was well prepared: the affection that my grandmother The Queen has for this nation is infectious. Her Majesty spoke recently of how, since her first visit here sixty years ago, she has been privileged to witness Australia's growing economy and flowering self-confidence."
